LATEST NEWS - WE HAVE CHOSEN THE PARTICIPANTS AMONG 150 PEOPLE

Odense Aftenskole is happy to arrange an European workshop with the subject
"
Weaving with the material of the nature, traditions and future."

This workshop will bring 14 people from 7 different European Contries together from the 21st to the 29th of may 2011.

Target Group

The target groups are adult learners who are interested in basketry and its cultural history and tradition. The workshop is open to all kind of learners including those with special needs, senior learners and learners at risk of social exclusion.

Handicraft does not call for special educational nor linguistic skills and therefore it is a unique and universal way to communicate.

Main activities / programme of the Workshop

This workshop will focus on how to weave a basket and how to use the same weaving techniques in architectural and sculptural work. The workshop will consist of a series of practical sessions with participants working on communal and individual projects. To place the workshops in a cultural and historical context we will make a number of powerpoint presentations illustrating basketry’s rich and culturally diverse heritage. We will make selected visits to contemporary galleries and historical museums to explore how basketry traditions have evolved through the centuries and how this craft is relevant today.
Daily Program

Day 1 – 2        Tim Johnson – Communal outdoor project, introduction to natural materials, creation of
ambitious willow sculpture, presentation and practical activities
Day 3 – 4        Steen Madsen – Historical basketsmaking – speech and practical workshop
Day 5             Visiting museum and modern exhibition
Day 6-7           Jette Mellgren - contemporary basketmaking – speech and practical workshop

Alongside the basketry workshops we will also arrange a variety of group events including, music, dance and fireside storytelling.

Expected outputs

The workshop will encourage the participants to work together and develop a greater understanding of each others cultural identity and heritage and an appreciation of European citizenship. The practical hands-on nature of basketmaking will help in the process of breaking down cultural boundaries and increase group collaboration and understanding. During the workshop participants will learn practical techniques that have real life value and are transferable to personnel circumstances upon their return home.  Working creatively strengthens your personal and artistic competence and by practical work you become more self-confident.
